What it is
In plain words, before anything else.
A sitemap is a file listing your pages so search engines and assistants know what exists. Without it they discover pages by following links, which means anything not linked from your homepage in a click or two tends to go unseen.
Nearly every website builder can produce one automatically. The usual reason a site has none is that nobody switched it on.
What it costs you
The loss you never see happen.
The pages that go missing are rarely the homepage. They are the service pages, the individual treatments, the location pages: exactly the ones that answer a specific question a customer asked.
It is also the cheapest item on this list to fix, which makes leaving it open the one that is hardest to justify.
